Granite Ghost Town State
The mountains surrounding Philipsburg are littered with ghost towns. Granite Ghost Town State Park, located five miles from Philipsburg, was once the site of a mine. The mine, as well as building foundations and the miner’s hall, are still standing.
While the Granite County Museum’s Hall of Fame wall features area ghost towns, pick up a free newspaper/guide for a list and map of the county’s ghost towns. Kirkville Ghost Town’s wooden structures can still be found one mile east of Philipsburg.
The Granite Ghost Town Walk trail takes you to these locations, as well as the foundations of many of the other buildings. Signs along the way provide some basic information but not much context. The Miner’s Union Hall, built-in 1890 at the cost of $23,000 and hosted many of the town’s dances, plays, and large meetings is the best-preserved structure in town.
Georgetown Lake
Georgetown Lake is a popular boating, fishing, camping, and windsurfing destination. Kokanee salmon is the most sought-after species at Georgetown Lake, followed by rainbow trout. The lake is 6,400 feet above sea level and is surrounded by the Pintler, Sapphire, and Flint Creek Mountain ranges. The beautiful scenery is accompanied by fresh mountain air. Trophy-sized rainbow and brook trout, as well as kokanee salmon, can be found in crystal clear water. Camping spots line the beach. The lake is bounded to the north by the Flint Creek Range and the south by the Pintlers. There are four public boat ramps on the lake.
