How many times have you lit your favorite scented candle, only to be disappointed by the burnt scent or lack of scent? Candles can be difficult to light the right way, especially if you are unfamiliar with how they work and how best to burn them.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t get the perfect-smelling candle every time with these simple tips and tricks to burning scented candles.
How a candle is made
The wax is then molded to create a wick, which is dipped in stearic acid and inserted into one end of a jar or mold. The candle maker then pours wax over that initial layer, creating a thicker coating and allowing for candles with multiple colors.
After burning, most scented candles need to be cleaned. Simply scrape off any residue left by melted wax, wash with warm water, and let dry before storing.
Types of candles available
If you are a candle enthusiast, then you likely have a favorite brand or even specific scents. But if you’re new to purchasing candles, it might be confusing to see all of these different options at your local drugstore.
Choosing scents
The most common mistake people make when choosing scents is going too strong. It’s easy to underestimate how a certain smell can change your mood, so if you don’t like stronger fragrances, it’s better to choose lighter scents that are easier on your nose.
However, everyone is different and everyone has a different way of being influenced by smells. If you’re looking for gift boxed scented candles, such as motivation or relaxation, think about what that kind of scent would be and keep it simple. For example, something citrusy might help you wake up in the morning while an earthy scent may be more relaxing at night.
How to choose the right candle
To get a candle that burns evenly and safely, you should consider multiple factors when selecting your candle. First, you’ll want to consider if you’re going to use it in a religious space, such as a church or temple. If so, be sure to choose one that is made from 100% soy wax and has been blessed by an officiates of your choosing.
Next, think about what size candle fits best with your altar. If you’re using it for meditation purposes, we recommend using a smaller candle about 2 inches wide and 3 inches tall and placing it on top of your altar.
Finally, take into consideration how often you plan on burning your candle: if you plan on lighting it every day, go for something bigger; otherwise, something smaller will do just fine.
How to burn your candle safely
Candles are a great way to scent a room, but they can also be dangerous. Don’t follow in these people’s footsteps by burning your grapefruit scented candles safely.
You should be sure to keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn and don’t use them as decoration if you have pets or small children.
Keep flammable items, such as towels and blankets, away from all open flames, including candles? Always place candles on sturdy surfaces that can handle the heat.
How long to burn your candle
How long you burn your candle depends on a few factors: What type of wax it is, what scent you’ve chosen, and what time of year it is. Soapstone candles are best burned for 12 hours straight every day.
You can burn taper candles safely for three to four hours at a time, while soy candles generally will smell their best when they’re burned for no more than two hours straight. When burning votives or jar candles, keep in mind that these scents are meant to linger longer so you don’t want to extinguish them too quickly.
If you want your room filled with fragrance, try lighting just one votive instead of an entire jar candle. If you have any questions about how long to burn a specific candle, just ask!
