The list of best Football Football teams has many different facets, but arguably the most popular is a list of the greatest defenses. The 1983 and 1986 Giants were a gleeful example of guerilla warfare, while the 1985 Bears were vicious in a different way. Both Football teams were led by vicious players, Lawrence Taylor and Leonard Marshall. So what is the best Football team in history? This article will help you decide.
1. Chelsea 2004-06
There is a long list of great football teams throughout history, but few can match the greatness of the teams from the last decade. During the 2000s, the Italian team Juventus won the UEFA Champions League and the 2004-05 season’s Italian league was dominated by Italian teams. But while the greatness of the Italian side is undeniable, the European team of 2003-04 also deserves a mention. Their sweeping attacking style dominated their opponents and led them to victory in the European Cup and the 2004 FIFA World Cup.
The legendary Manchester United team of ’98 was a great team, winning the league twice and the FA Cup twice. Their legendary players included David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane, and Pat Riley. They played till the end of the season in the 1999 Champions League final, beating Bayern Munich in the ’98 Champions League. With late goals by Sheringham and Solskjaer, they were crowned champions.
2-Saint-Etienne 1973-77
In the 1970s, Saint-Etienne won the Ligue 1 title for the third time, and the French Cup for the fourth time. In 1976, the club won the Coupe de France for the third time and reached the final. Its greatest moments came during a decade of dominance in French football, with seven Ligue 1 titles and five Coupe de France. In 1977, the team beat Bayern Munich in the European Cup final, where they would ultimately come in second.
Saint Etienne were the three-time French champions, and in the previous season, had lost to Bayern Munich. The team was captained by Jean-Michel Larque and managed by Robert Herbin, and included many French national team players including Yugoslavian goalkeeper Yvan Curkovic and Argentinian stopper Oswaldo Piazza.
3-Leicester 2015-16
The title race has heated up in the Premier League this season. Leicester were bottom of the table at the start of the season. They had not won in thirteen games, and had lost six of them. Only two previous teams have escaped last place at Christmas, and they remained there until April 18 with nine games to play. But Leicester have been able to turn their fortunes around and have won six of their last seven games.
The 2015-16 season has been one of the most remarkable in Premier League history. The Foxes were 5,000/1 outsiders heading into the season, and the bookmakers didn’t think they would win it. However, they did just that, and finished top. They were also crowned Champions League champions for the first time. And this is just the beginning. With a new manager, they can do even better next season.
4- Hamburg 1977-83
In the season of 1982-83, Hamburger SV played their 36th season in the Bundesliga, their 20th straight year of playing in the league. They also participated in the DFB-Pokal, but were eliminated by Hertha BSC in the round of 16. The season featured some notable players such as Ferdinand Magath, Wolfgang Rolff, Jimmy Hartwig, and Allan Hansen in the midfield. Other notable players included Horst Hrubesch, Lars Bastrup, and Thomas von Heesen.
5. Marseille 1988-93
Marseille were domestic omnipotence during the eighties. Francescoli and Papin both scored 41 goals in Ligue 1 during the era. In fact, Marseille was only two points behind Paris Saint-Germain in the 1989-90 title race and won it by four points in 1990. In their final game against PSG, Marseille won 1-0 in the 90th minute thanks to a goal from Franck Sauzee. Later, Marseille would win the Coupe de France with a 4-3 victory over Monaco, who were coached by Areene Wenger.
Tapie, Marseille’s club president from 1989-93, had a turbulent relationship with his fellow football clubs and allegedly instructed his players to put the OM ahead of their teammates. He is still a prominent figure in French football, however, and is believed to have invented the concept of Le Classique. Tapie also convinced Canal+ to invest in PSG, in order to keep both teams on their toes.
