The fashion cycle
Fashion trends are cyclical. The cycle is typically four seasons, with a few extra months for holidays and Spring/Summer. The fashion industry has been moving in this direction for decades, but it wasn’t until the early 2000s when designers really embraced this idea of constant reinvention.
This is one reason why we see trends come back into style years later. Fashion recycles, says GQ fashion director Jim Moore. It’s just that people have short attention spans.
The three main places where we can find new trends are at runway shows, magazine editorials, and on social media feeds from celebrities and influencers.
It all depends on who you follow closely to determine which way you’ll lean in your wardrobe choices for the season.
If you like what you see on Gigi Hadid or Kendall Jenner, for example, then those brands will become part of your radar.
But if their styles don’t speak to you, then their clothing won’t be worth considering as an option. Social media is also good place to start because there are more options than ever before.
When scrolling through pictures or even watching video clips, brands will eventually stand out among
the others because they show up more often or pop out due to certain styling cues that catch our eye like embellishment or unconventional pattern choice.
Brands like Monse and Céline constantly show up in my feed thanks to influencers I admire wearing them often enough for me not only recognize them but actively want them as a part of my closet too!
The fashion calendar
The fashion industry changes quickly, so it can be hard to keep up. Worry not, though! We have the ultimate guide for you. You’ll learn about the four major fashion seasons,
what they are and what goes into them. Plus, we’re going over everything from color theories to how many days each season is – we’ve got you covered. Whether you’re looking for the hottest trends or want a rundown of what’s in and what’s out, this post will make your life easier!
First things first, the basics.
When does fall start? Fall begins on September 22nd. It lasts until November 21st. Fall is known as the most romantic time of year because it offers a chance to enjoy warm weather before winter starts again.
Do I need to wear layers when transitioning from summer clothes to fall clothing? Yes! There are two ways that you should transition: either by gradually wearing lighter pieces, or by using layering techniques like layering an oversized sweater with thinner tops underneath it for warmth.
How do I know if my outfits match my mood? Here’s a helpful chart that tells you which colors go best with different emotions and personalities –
Optimistic and happy: bright shades like yellow and orange help to give off a cheerful vibe. They also work well if you’re feeling confident or creative.
– Excited and energetic: try wearing deep blue, dark green, navy blue, reds, purples and golds – these colors evoke feelings of safety and security while also being energizing.
– Comfortable but still stylish: neutral shades like black, brown, white (though very light ones) or khaki always look chic no matter the occasion. They make any outfit seem cozy too.
How the industry works
Trends are driven by what’s happening in the world, what people are talking about, and what celebrities are wearing.
The fashion industry is cyclical, meaning it goes through a series of trend cycles that dictate where they put their focus. The most common cycle lasts two years.
During these cycles, trends come in and out at different times. For example, during one cycle you might see athleisure wear as a big trend while during the next cycle it would be more popular for dresses to take center stage.
Regardless of what the trend happens to be, there will always be something new coming up soon so it’s important to stay up-to-date on current styles and designers.
There are also various other resources online that can help keep you informed like street style blogs or websites like The Coveteur. With this guide, you’ll never have to worry about what’s in and what’s out!
To start off, let’s go over what a fashion trend is. When it comes down to deciding whether an item of clothing has become trendy or not, we often look for wearability. How many different ways can I wear this?
That type of thought process often points us towards the item being fashionable. But how do these items get into our shopping carts in the first place?
In order to explain how things work within the industry and identify why certain items are in while others are out, I want to talk about what the fashion industry calls its fashion cycle.
All industries follow some kind of pattern but because clothes go through their changes much faster than anything else (sometimes even quicker than one season!), there needs to be some system established.
The most common cycle lasts 2 years with each part having its own specific purposes. Each cycle starts with Pre-Fall, which usually focuses on the basics like black blazers, white button downs, etc.
It then moves onto the Fall/Winter portion where coats and boots tend to dominate. Once Spring rolls around, pastels and lighter colors make their debut with
summer providing plenty of opportunities for showing skin and experimenting with your personal style. And finally back to pre-fall when we start all over again!
The basics of what you need to know about trends
A fashion trend is anything that has a sudden surge in popularity. It can be as small as a new detail or as major as an entirely new silhouette.
You’ll notice trends popping up in everything from fashion editorials, runway shows, advertising campaigns and street style snaps.
Trend forecasting is the art of predicting what will be popular next season by looking at which colors,
silhouettes, materials and details are trending now.
Predictions are based on research and observation; however, it should be noted that predicting the future isn’t always easy!
Here’s how we do it: We look at current fashion magazines for emerging trends
and dissect them for insights about which way the industry might be headed.
We also study runway collections for insight into what will come down the pipeline (sometimes things change midway through production).
The best part? We get to see all this stuff ahead of time so you don’t have to!
Here are some key takeaways to keep in mind while you’re reading our predictions:
*We make these predictions four times a year,
so if something we said would be trendy just last month didn’t happen yet,
that doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen!
*Every brand has its own philosophy and aesthetics, which means not every prediction may apply to your favorite designers.
*Just because something is in today doesn’t mean it will stay in tomorrow-chances are good that there’s another big trend coming around the corner.
