Porcelain tableware set
Porcelain is usually a lot lighter than ceramic. Nevertheless, the hardness of the material ensures a high degree of sturdiness. This is partly because porcelain is manufactured at a high oven temperature (1300 – 1500 degrees). If you opt for porcelain, you have sturdy and light tableware that is very practical for daily use.
Of course, you have porcelain in many shapes and sizes. This is reflected in the material properties and the quality of the porcelain. Well-known alternative forms are Fine Bone China and Premium Porcelain.
Fine Bone China
Fine Bone China is, as the name suggests, made from (at least 30%) calcined beef bones. It is of high quality and is really a luxurious type of porcelain. Fine Bone China is white in color and is characterized by the fact that the thin material has a translucent effect. Although it is a light material, this does not affect its sturdiness.
Premium porcelain
Premium Porcelain is popular with households as well as in professional kitchens. It is practical, sturdy, and timeless. Often Premium Porcelain is white or cream-colored and slightly heavier and thicker than Fine Bone China.
- + Sturdy, which makes porcelain dishes very practical for everyday use.
- + Light in weight compared to ceramic tableware.
- + Easy to clean and dishwasher safe.
- + Well suited for heating products in a microwave.
- – Poor heat conduction, heat does not penetrate quickly into the material.
- – Almost only available in shades of white
Ceramic (earthenware) tableware
In addition to porcelain, ceramics are also very popular as a choice of material for tableware. Ceramic is manufactured at a lower oven temperature (800 – 1150 degrees) and is partly for this reason somewhat softer than porcelain. Pottery has a natural and refined look. A glaze layer makes the earthenware firmer, making it less susceptible to scratches. Nevertheless, it is important to treat ceramic tableware with care.
Stoneware
Stoneware tableware is a type of earthenware that is made of clay with a fine grain. Usually, stoneware is somewhat stronger than other forms of ceramics. The robust and sturdy appearance makes this tableware shape extremely popular.
- + It is microwave safe.
- + Easy to clean and dishwasher safe.
- + Pottery is more often available in a special color or print.
- – It is a bit more fragile than porcelain and therefore more sensitive to the impact
- – Shouldn’t be left in a damp dishwasher for too long
Tip from our tableware expert: “Ceramic dishes are dishwasher safe. Keep an eye on it! Once the dishwashing cycle has finished, never leave the dishes in an unopened dishwasher. Otherwise, the moisture will penetrate the ceramic, which will affect the quality.”
Other types of tableware material
Although porcelain and ceramics are the most popular tableware materials, you can also opt for a less common shape. The most well-known alternatives are glass, wooden or plastic tableware.
